Wüstenland

Wüstenland

Along the west coast of South America, as here in Paracas, there is a band of desert that is only a few kilometres wide but 3,700 kilometres long. A wide variety of forces - from the rain shadow of the mighty Andes Cordillera to a cold ocean current and a high-pressure area in the south-eastern Pacific - shape the desert character of this surreal stretch of land, which is set in aridity right next to the water of the ocean. It is not unusual for strong winds to sweep across Paracas' desert, to which it owes its name - Paracas, the sandstorm.
