Wolken über Feuerland

Wolken über Feuerland

In the past, major forest fires occurred in Muddus National Park approximately every 110 years, though they rarely affected more than 2% of the forest area. Even though no major fires have been recorded since 2006, the sky above Muddus National Park is still often ablaze today. Cumulus clouds often tower over the area, rising far higher than the highest peak of Oerjemus Stubbá (658 m above sea level). Large amounts of moisture evaporate from the dense coniferous forests, rise, and condense into large cloud cover. Since 45% of Muddus’s area consists of bogs, this further increases humidity, which also promotes cloud formation. Due to the resulting higher natural frequency of rain, forest fires would rarely reach large proportions even without human intervention in the form of modern firefighting methods.
