Vaara

Scandinavia was once covered by massive ice sheets, which, due to their weight and the masses of debris they carried with them, literally sanded down the ground and smoothed the old mountain ranges into rounded mountains. As the climate changed and the warming rays of the sun allowed plants to grow, coniferous forests overgrew large parts of the land over time. Mountains that have been completely submerged by the blue-green sea of the taiga and stand like congealed wave crests above the plain are distinguished in Finland from the bare-topped mountains, the tunturi, and are known as vaara.
