Skarv

The skarv, borrowed from the Old Norse "skarfr", as the shag was still called under Johann Friedrich Naumann, the founder of ornithology, does not grease its plumage, which allows the species to dive deeper. During the dive, the water on the plumage pushes a layer of air from the feathers towards the body, which acts as a layer of thermal insulation. As soon as the animals leave the water, the air is pushed back into the feathers, which in turn protects them from hypothermia on land.
