Sastrugi-Meer

In the barren, open, treeless fell regions of Lapland - the tunturi - the frozen sea of sastrugi can be found in winter. The wind sweeps unhindered across the vast white expanse, leaving behind waves of snow - the sastrugi - in the desolate snowy landscape. Carved out of ice, the sastrugi once served as a compass for the Nordic peoples, such as the Chukchi - at least according to Ferdinand von Wrangel’s historical records. Since the sastrugi always shift parallel to the prevailing wind direction, they still reliably indicate the way today, even when the wind dies down and one must find one’s bearings in the white void.
