Odins Mantel

Odins Mantel

Especially during the cold Raunächte of the Yule festival, at Christmas, one can observe the “Wild Hunt” - or, in Old Norse, the “Óðinsjakt” - in the night sky. At the head of his retinue, as leader of the Einherjar - the souls of fallen warriors - Odin rides on his noble eight-legged steed, Sleipnir. He is cloaked in his black mantle, which absorbs light, allowing him to travel unrecognized through the worlds. To mortals and other gods, Odin takes on the form of an old wanderer in this cloak during his travels through the worlds of the giants, the dwarves, and the dead. On Earth, with a bit of luck, the “Wild Hunt” can sometimes be observed even in the summer months in the formation of sea ravens, shrouded in their black cloaks.
