Mosaik

The end of the last ice age was the beginning of the formation of the natural areas that characterise Lapland today - a patchwork of mountains, forests, lakes and mires.

Born from the receding glaciers, the mires are still locations with extreme living conditions today. Temperatures fluctuate greatly, there is an anaerobic, hostile layer beneath the surface, and for many months the mire freezes in ice, snow and darkness. The mires themselves are a mosaic of open water areas, treeless plains, small tree islands and forest bogs, and each of these zones in turn harbours its own specific flora and fauna. The mires of the north are home to numerous creatures that form a unique biocoenosis.
