Mönch

Mönch

The puffin was once jokingly referred to as a monk or little brother due to its black and white dress similar to a priest's robe. In the colourful beak, to which the species probably owes its name today, the puffin has spines on the palate, with which the prey is held with the help of the rough tongue while hunting for more fish. The age of a puffin can be determined by the shape of its beak, which changes from triangular to convex over the years, and by the number of distal grooves.
