Land der Ahnen

Land der Ahnen

The first forests on earth had a very different appearance to the ones we know today. In the great swamp forests of the Carboniferous period, huge lycopsid trees, ferns and giant horsetails grew, which significantly changed the global climate through photosynthesis. The remains of these archaic forests are now stored in the large coal deposits, but the descendants of these then dominant species still populate the earth. With around 12,000 species, ferns are by far the most widespread and species-rich group.
