König für ein Tertial

König für ein Tertial

For about a third of the year, European shags (Phalacrocorax aristotelis) reign as kings of the north. In the spring, starting in March, the European shags return to their ancestral kingdoms - the breeding colonies on the cliffs of Norway - to remain there in all their regal splendor well into the summer. Only during this time do they display to all their subjects, with their crown (the crest), just how noble their bloodline truly is. But as is so often the case, appearances are deceiving, for their behavior at their residence is certainly not regal. Although they are usually quite silent, they display a marked talkativeness at the nest, which, however, is most reminiscent of pigs due to their clicking and grunting sounds.
