Kittiwaka

Kittiwaka

The deafening cries at the breeding sites, described onomatopoeically as a rapid, nasal kitt-i-Wääik, gave rise to the name Kittiwaka for the species. The throats of up to 100,000 breeding pairs create an acoustic wall that is at least as mighty as the Nordic bird cliffs. But as soon as the breeding season ends, the wall previously built by the sea crow, as the kittiwake was also known, is torn down in order to regain the freedom of the open sea. What remains are the traces of the ancient times drawn on slate.
