Huanu

Huanu

Due to the importance of guano as a fertiliser (Inca language: Huanu = dung, manure), the Incas were probably one of the first civilisations to establish conservation measures to protect the three most important guano producers, the guanay cormorant, the Peruvian pelican and the Peruvian booby. The entire Inca civilisation was dependent on guano production, so any killing or even disturbance of the birds was punished with death.
