Herbstoffenbarung

When the birch trees prepare for winter in the fall, the chlorophyll in the leaves is broken down and the yellow carotenoids, which act as protection against excessive sunlight, appear. In addition to these pigments, a chemical compound called betulin, which gives the birch bark its typical white color, makes the birch one of the hardiest deciduous trees due to its impermeability to water and its ability to withstand temperatures of -40 °C.
