Heimatland
Unreal, forbidding, and yet breathtakingly beautiful - this is how the Urho Kekkonen National Park, home to so many animals of the far north, presents itself in winter. Vast expanses, at times barren and empty, and at others teeming with life beneath a meter-thick blanket of snow - this is how this incredibly beautiful region in northern Finland appears during the winter. Although it appears so empty, it is home - at least seasonally - to over 130 different bird species, such as the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, or the year-round resident ptarmigan, and more than 20 different mammal species, including the moose, the brown bear, the lynx, and the wolverine. In addition to these inhabitants, however, it is also home to a special representative of the North. In the eastern part of the park, near the Russian border in the Korvatunturi fells, hidden deep in the mountains, Santa Claus also calls Urho Kekkonen National Park his home.
