Fennoskandia

As far as a mountain range rises above the lowlands, as far as a country is from the equator, so great are the differences in climate and vegetation between summit and plain, between north and south. High up in northern Europe, at the same latitude as Alaska, the vegetation changes radically even in the smallest of areas. As a result, in the northern regions of Fennoscandia, a closed forest can disappear completely within just a few hundred metres of altitude difference and, when the fog lifts, a treeless, barren land is revealed on the mountain flanks.
