Entzweites Land

Entzweites Land

The tropical dry forests contrast strongly with the green tropical rainforests. Although they are located in neighbouring areas at the same geographical latitudes, they could not be more different. They are characterised by alternating periods of rain and extended periods of drought, which demands very special adaptations from the plant species in these regions, but has also resulted in a high level of endemism. On the west coast of South America, the two defining seasons are characterised by a tug of war between two opposing ocean currents - the warm Panama Current from the north brings rain and the cold Peru Current from the south brings drought.
