Ahnen

Ahnen

According to the Sámi, the indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, there is an underworld alongside the upper world of the gods and the middle world of humans, in which the spirits, including the deceased, eke out their existence. According to this belief, every person has three souls: the spiritual soul belonging to the upper world, the middle soul of bodily functions and, thirdly, the name soul, which establishes a connection between the bearer of the name and a deceased person. In this way, every newborn child is given the name of an ancestor, whereby their abilities are passed on to the child.
